  • Show Formed

The Southern District Agricultural Show was formed in 1914, the first show was held at Billown near Ballasalla. Before 1914 there was only one Agricultural Society formed, the Isle of Man Agricultural Society, and shows were held at Milntown in Ramsey and The Nunnery in Douglas. For many years the Farmers of the South argued that they wanted to bring the Show further southas moving their livestock to Douglas and Ramsey was a lengthy and complicated affair. As an agreement to this was not forthcoming, the southern farms decided to hold their own show, and the Southern District Agricultural Society was formed.

We have had various other homes since 1914, Westhill Park in Castletown was descried as “one of the finest settings the Island has to offer” but with a new Girls school needing to be built we moved to Farrants Flatt in Castletown this had been previously used as a car park for the show.

  • Move to Janet’s Corner

The 1960’s saw us move to Janet’s Corner, but with more land needed for housing around Castletown we never stayed anywhere for long!

  • Show returns to Great Meadow

In 1973 the show returned to Great Meadow, close to the original site where it had been held in 1920. The Show has been held at Great Meadow in Castletown for nearly 50 years, and the Moore-Riggall Family have been involved with the Show since it’s early beginnings in 1914. The Society will forever be extremely grateful to Mr & Mrs Riggall and Family for the support given to the Show over many, many years.

  • New Showground at Orrisdale Farm

As interest in the Show has continued to grow along with visitor and exhibitor numbers so have the requirements for the Showfield. Our new Showground at Orrisdale Farm, Ballasalla, has been made possible with the generosity of The Kermode Family and we hope to have many happy years here.

  • Where we are now

The Southern Show is organised by a team of volunteers who each year give up a huge amount of their time to put together and dismantle the Show Field, for which we are eternally grateful.

The Southern District Agricultural Society is an Isle of Man Registered Charity, with over 40 members and 17 Life members.
